March 2008
March 31, 2008Mascara ManiaSpring beauty trends might be bright lips and nude faces, but it's mascara that keeps landing on my desk. I'm up to my eyeballs. Lest you become overwhelmed by the options, I tested out the newest tubes. While I have naturally long lashes, I need separation and thickening. My standbys are Maybelline Lash Discovery (for natural, yet super-long lashes, thanks to a tiny brush that coats and extends each one), and Dior Show (for a blackest-black drama without clumps). Do not so much as breath the words Maybelline Great Lash to me for I do not agree with a million other beauty editors: The drippy, gooey, gloppy stuff in the pink and green tube is the devil. Here, a round-up of the mascaras I tried, any how they delivered on their promises. Read more » Posted on Monday, March 31, 2008 in Style File | Permalink | Comments (2) |

March 27, 2008Spring Fever
I think spring fever officially set in for me around mid-December. It didn't help that my husband and I didn't make our annual homage to The Boulders and Golden Door Spa in Arizona. So to say I'm desperate for sun and warmth (heck, I'd even take humidity), is an understatement. I did get the closest thing to relief at Macy's Latin-themed spring flower show, Floranova, and it is spectacular. Take a spin through the first floor of the downtown Minneapolis store and you'll emerge a different person. Where as last year the floor was kept at a chilly 60 degrees to preserve the plantings, this year it's a sweet-smelling... March 24, 2008Crate & Barrel
I finally made it out to the new Crate & Barrel at the Galleria. It's been open for almost two weeks, after all! Which, in style editor years, is, like, a lifetime. I guess I wasn't in a hurry because a) I'm not-so-secretely annoyed and saddened that this meant a closing for the Nicollet Mall location (not to mention Southdale), which was at the very least, a visual asset for downtown and a nod Minneapolis as a shopping destination for the masses. Target Commericial Interiors won't have quite same effect. And b) I've shopped at the Chicago C&B for years and knew that at less than half the size, even the new Galleria shop wouldn't compare. Alas, I needed... Read more » Posted on Monday, March 24, 2008 in Style File | Permalink | Comments (0) |

March 20, 2008Baby, Baby
Now that I have the attention of my friends and mother . . . One of my favorite stores is opening up a second shop and I couldn't be more excited for them, or me. Pacifier is one of those success stories that makes me giddy with possibility: Girl hates corporate job, meanwhile can't find cool baby gift. Girl quits job and opens fantastic cool baby gift store with husband and it's a huge hit. After four and a half years in NE Minneapolis, Pacifier is coming to Gaviidae Commons - on the first level, next to Saks. They should arrive in early April. I stopped by the NE location this week, to... Read more » Posted on Thursday, March 20, 2008 in Style File | Permalink | Comments (0) |

March 17, 2008Nick Arrojo and Me
Stacy and Clinton are just dandy, and I love what Carmindy does with that eye brightening stick, but let's be honest: I watch What Not to Wear for Nick Arrojo. When this sweet, charming, kind-hearted hairstylist extraoridaire walks onto my TV screen, ain't nothing going to tear me away from the makeover magic he's about to bring.

March 10, 2008MN Fashion Week(end)
It was a big weekend for fashion in Minneapolis. I'm exhausted. My friends are exhausted. And I'm pretty sure that the half-naked entertainers who were dancing on the tables all night at CLUB DIVA are exhausted. If you missed it, Saturday night DIVA MN threw it's annual fashion bash fundraiser. Local designers, including a few students, competed to show their designs. Although some of them missed the mark completely (ill-fitting, cheap-looking, prom dresses?), I was blown away by Jason Hammerberg's menswear collection. I'm a sucker for paisley, especially when used subtly. My husband would wear these, and that is the ultimate test. I also loved finally getting to... March 3, 2008Good Things
I don't know about you, but I have a closetful of "formals" that I will never wear again. There are the bridemaid dresses that I are too long to serve any other purpose, the little black sorority-dance dresses that are, um, too little, and the miscellany that I bought for "just in case" and never did get invited to that cocktail party. All of the above would be perfect for consighment if they did not require dry cleaning, which would cost me just as much as I would make on their sale. So they've sat, until now. I have discovered the PERFECT solution. One of my favorite local charity events, Operation Glass Slipper, an organization that collection prom attire and accessosries for high...
