May 29, 2008Always a Bridesmaid
I am up to my big brown eyeballs in weddings. I am not complaining. My lovely girlfriends held my train and carried the perfect red lipstick for me, too, many (okay, five) years ago. And I am thrilled to do the same for them. For one of these joyous occasions I have been tasked with selecting the bridesmaid dresses. I was given a few criteria: must be short, chocolate brown, and not too bridesmaid-y. Bless the bride. I don't need anything tea-length, gingham, or chiffon-like in my closet. May 22, 2008Girls Gone StyledI grew up in St. Paul, and though I now reside across the river, I will always have a soft spot for Grand Avenue. I love to shop there with friends, or meet my family at Cafe Latte for pizza and wine. As an editor, however, I've developed a new-found appreciation for the retailers in the area. They are some of the friendliest, most creative, and hard-working women I've encountered in the business. But what really gets me about this group is their supportive and collaborative approach. Case in point: tonight's Girls Gone Styled event. Read more » Posted on Thursday, May 22, 2008 in Style File | Permalink | Comments (1) |

May 19, 2008BCBG to Open (Finally)
After a slight construction delay, BCBG will open in the Galleria of Edina on Thursday. The 4,700-square-foot store is located in the new atrium, next to Crate & Barrel. Although this is the first freestanding boutique in Minnesota (and the only one in the Upper Midwest), there are mini BCBG stores within Macy's and they always seem to be buzzing—especially when there's a sale, which is almost a prerequisite for shopping this pricey brand. May 12, 2008Clutch to Close
Last week when I was pulling together a few work wardrobe staples for a segment on Twin Cities Live (Wednesday at 3!), I stopped dead in my tracks at Clutch Boutique. I'd love to say it was some ridiculous designer satchel that left me speechless, but alas, no. Signs in the window declared that this locally-owned handbag destination is going out of business. Now, it's a sad day when any shop closes, but when it's one of my favorite local retailers (love the unique merchandise and hard-to-find labels), it's heart-breaking. May 5, 2008Arts & Crafts Revival
I grew up thinking I might be adopted. My parents and I just didn't see eye-to-eye on interior design. They filled our 1960s colonial with Arts and Crafts furniture, and stained glass that my mom created in the basement workroom. I couldn't appreciate this. I wanted a pink bedroom with a window seat an canopy bed—not exactly Frank Lloyd Wright. As an adult, I've developed some appreciation for Prairie Style architecture. It's simple, but not in a harsh, minimalist way. When I stayed at Canoe Bay in a cottage built by Wright's protege, John Rattenbury, I felt calmed and comforted by the space. I was recently blown away by a collection of ceramic vases originally... Read more » Posted on Monday, May 5, 2008 in Style File | Permalink | Comments (1) |
