Louis Comfort Tiffany
“Mandarin Lotus Leaf” table lamp, Tiffany Studios, between 1901 and 1905Though he was the heir apparent to Tiffany & Co. jewelry company, Louis C. Tiffany chose instead to pursue life as an artist. From 1885 to 1928, his New York company, Tiffany Studios, produced stained glass windows, Tiffany lamps, and other interior decorations in the Art Nouveau style. Organic, quasi-Asian shapes and curves, sweeping hyperbolas and parabolas, and a distinct reliance on natural motifs, such as leaves, seaweed, and insects, characterize these designs. His “Mandarin Lotus Leaf” lamp, pictured, is currently housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
