Luxurious quarters sport entertainment options galore

The cedar shakes and stone exterior of this 8,200-square-foot house suggest a northern Minnesota lodge, but the spectacular pond, waterfall, and swimming pool would be right at home at a mountainside retreat.

David Bieker, president of Denali Custom Homes, used natural colors, limestone, and textures to give this large home a sense of comfortable style. “With a house as large as this one, you have to do something to keep it from overwhelming its occupants,” he says. The front entryway’s limestone arch and columns bring warmth and texture to the space, while Douglas fir newel posts add a rustic touch.

The foyer is accented with European plaster walls and a stone archway that leads the way to the impressive great room. Huge windows set off the granite-faced gas fireplace inside and the water features outside. Cherry built-in cabinets and 10-foot ceilings complete the room’s careful details.

The adjacent open kitchen features a 9-by-6-foot mahogany island and ample space for informal dining. Through the kitchen is the formal dining room, with European wall plaster and a tongue-and-groove ceiling supported with linear wood beams.

Bieker’s favorite room in the house is the generous four-season porch off the kitchen. Its stone fireplace, tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling, and heated limestone floor lend a rustic feel to the comfortable space.

A luxurious den on the same level sports a view of the backyard pond and pool, while cherry cabinets with a walnut stain create a warm, work-friendly environment. The faux finishes on the walls and 14-inch crown moldings give the space a European style. The adjacent bathroom features a complementary wall finish, a granite-topped custom cabinet, and tumbled limestone floors with granite insets.

In the owners’ suite, the beamed, 15-foot ceiling lends distinction, while the limestone fireplace, cherry built-in cabinets, and exquisite Romeo-and-Juliet balcony add a touch of elegance. Quiet mornings lounging in bed are certain to be soothed by the sound of trickling water below.

Also on the upper level are three children’s bedrooms, each with access to either a private bath or a Jack-and-Jill bath. At the end of the upstairs hall is a bonus room with numerous possibilities. “It could be an extra room for the kids, but we also roughed in plumbing for a future bath so it could be converted to a nanny’s apartment if need be,” Bieker says.

The lower level is all play. A family room with a fieldstone fireplace looks out onto the pool, plus an additional room doubles as a changing room or guest bedroom, Bieker says. Behind the game room and full bar (which includes black enameled cabinets, a dishwasher, a sink, and a refrigerator) is a large workout room. A delightful billiards room features a custom light fixture made out of an old duck boat and knotty alder wall paneling throughout.

Still more entertainment options abound: the indoor sport court, and three-level,12-seat home theater with a 120-inch movie screen, projector, and 7.1 surround sound. The home theater even has textured silk wall treatments to add acoustic oomph to the impressive space.

With beauty, fun, and comfort built right in, the owners will never want to be   anywhere else.
