T’was a Minute Before Deadline
By Chris Lee
T’was the night before Holidazzle when all through the place,Not a square inch was empty, not mantel or staircase.
The garlands were hung with a designer’s fine flair,
The perfect accompaniment to a theme built with care.
The pinecones and spangles were snug in their greens,
While bright organdy ribbons showed off their sheens.
Hors d’oeuvres on their platter and champagne in its flutes,
Added just the right sparkle to a holiday salute.
Traditions kick in as the big day approaches,
With kids giving new life to mom’s vintage touches.
Each light and each orb on the fresh-cut fir tree,
Re-kindle glad memories of holiday esprit.
The only thing missing is a red potted plant,
Bursting with color and blooms that enchant.
Poinsettias in June start their holiday cheer,
And fill area greenhouses for the rest of the year.
They move to the forefront come Thanksgiving Day,
And then settle in for a long winter’s stay.
Buy red-flowered classics and give them as gifts,
Or go out on a limb with more mod-colored picks.
Gift shopping, a burden and challenge for some,
Is short-cut with items both useful and fun.
From upscale and classic to retro and hip,
Our gift guide drops names at an impressive clip.
Now Sony! Now Sagaform! Now Apple and Tesla!
On Porsche! On Conran! On Filson and Leica!
From Patina to Tangletown to Joe’s Sporting Goods,
Make merry at shops within your neighborhoods.
In the rush to attain divine seasonal décor,
Remember the meaning behind all your chores.
We here at Midwest Home wish you a good year,
And pass on to all our best holiday cheer.
